Women's rights in Honduras - Engender event

Engender are hosting an evening with two women's rights activists from Honduras.  The women are on a speaking tour of the UK organised by the Central America Women's Network and they will be in the Engender office on Thursday 7th April, 6.30 -8pm to talk about the situation for women in Honduras following the 2009 military coup.  Both women are survivors of violence and have been involved in self-help groups.  See full details of the event here - please forward to your networks.  RSVP: karen@engender.org.uk or call 0131 558 9596 

Who counts? in parliament

O ur Who Counts? event in Parliament on March 16th was a fantastic evening with input from a lot of the groups who have been involved in the project.  There was an opportunity to see artwork from Kiran Women's Group and Women Loud and Proud, an emotional piece of theatre from Beechwood Women's Arts Group and a funny, but pointed, skit from Shakti on the issue of no recourse to public funds.  Project worker, Rosaria Votta, gave an overview of the project and Jasmine from Umoja Inc spoke of what being involved had meant to the group.  See more pics 

Women in Scotland's Economy hold first conference

T he first WiSE conference will be held in Glasgow on 24th -26th May and will feature the wonderfully inspiring Professor Marilyn Waring.  Engender thoroughly recommends the documentary about Marilyns work 'Who's Counting? Marilyn Waring on Sex, Lies and Global Economics' which we screened a few years ago to a great response.  The conference, 'Counting on Women - Gender, Care and Economics', will also hear from Professor Martha Fineman followed by two days of workshops, seminars and discussions focussing on gender budgeting in practice and women in the care economy.  Full details and booking info  

Scottish Women's Aid publish evaluation

An outcome evaluation report recently published by Scottish Women’s Aid found that nine out of ten women would strongly recommend Women's Aid services to a friend because she would "recieve non-judgemental support on a broad range of issues tailored to meet her individual needs and abilities."  The report demonstrates the positive outcomes for women who use Women’s Aid services.  Read the report

Take Action...

The European Women's Lobby are campaigning for the new Hungarian consitution to be re-drafted.  The constitution, which is due to be finalised on April 25th, contains provisons that could limit women's reproductive rights. The EWL have a model letter on site to be sent to the Hungarian PM.  Read more

The Actors Kitchen Theatre Co is an exciting new Edinburgh based company which aims to give women a voice.  They will be performing Shelagh Stevenson's 'The Memory of Water' at Hill St. Theatre, Edinburgh 26th April - 1st May.  You can find out  more about the company and buy tickets at  www.actorskitchen.co.uk
